The renovated Lexington City Center transforms a former office building into an open, accessible destination for civic life in downtown Lexington.
Designed as a centralized customer service hub, the space brings together multiple city utility services into one clear point of access, making it easier for residents to navigate essential resources. Improved visibility and intuitive planning create an experience that is efficient, transparent, and community-focused.
PROJECT GOALS
The project aimed to unify services, simplify access, and create a civic space that better serves the community.
It responds to previously fragmented service locations by consolidating departments into a single, easy-to-navigate environment. At the same time, it establishes a more open setting that supports both daily operations and broader public engagement.

Objectives
- Streamline access to city utility services.
- Establish flexible spaces for collaboration and public engagement
- Maximize daylight and improve visual connectivity throughout the building.

SOLUTIONS
Through strategic adaptive reuse, the design preserves the existing concrete structure while introducing targeted interventions that enhance performance and user experience.
A reimagined exterior improves energy efficiency and strengthens the building’s presence at street level, while a new entry canopy establishes a clear point of arrival. Inside, reconfigured layouts and flexible gathering spaces support efficient service delivery and community use, positioning the building as a vital public resource.
IMPROVE ACCESS TO CITY UTILITIES
A clearer, more intuitive service experience
By bringing multiple utility departments together, the design simplifies how residents access essential services. Thoughtful circulation and an open layout reduce friction, creating an experience that is easy to understand and navigate.

ADAPTIVE COMMUNITY SPACES
Designed for flexibility and connection
Flexible spaces throughout the building support a wide range of uses, from team collaboration to public meetings and events. These adaptable environments encourage interaction and reinforce the building’s role as an active hub for both city staff and the broader community.

ENHANCE DAYLIGHT AND VISIBILITY
A brighter, more transparent civic environment
Interior spaces were opened to bring natural light deeper into the building, improving comfort and visibility. This increased transparency fosters a more inviting atmosphere while supporting productivity and overall user experience.

Results
Lexington City Center transforms an existing building into a modern, high-performing facility for civic life
By unifying services, improving accessibility, and introducing flexible, light-filled environments, the project replaces traditional barriers with a seamless and efficient experience. The result is a civic destination that supports daily operations while strengthening connections between the city and its residents.
