Boston Consulting Group (BCG) was growing in the Carolinas and needed a home that could keep pace.

Situated within the American Tobacco Campus in downtown Durham, the 13,500-square-foot space transforms a Class A adaptive reuse building into a refined, hospitality-forward workplace. With direct views of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the office balances BCG's global brand identity with a distinctly local character, creating a place where employees, clients, and guests genuinely want to be.

Design Objectives

  1. Create a seamless front-of-house experience that transitions naturally from arrival to collaboration
  2. Design for flexibility, supporting multiple work styles across a compact footprint
  3. Integrate local identity and brand expression without competing with BCG’s global standards
  4. Prioritize acoustic comfort, natural light, and employee well-being throughout
  5. Support a mid-design program expansion without disrupting quality, schedule, or intent

Solutions

The design concept, Refined Connections, guided everything from material choices to spatial planning. When BCG expanded the work lounge midway through design, the team used it as a chance to rethink the entire arrival experience, resulting in a seamless reception-to-lounge environment anchored by a sculptural wood-and-light ceiling installation. Hospitality-inspired lounges, flexible work settings, and local touches like Durham photography and a custom art installation featuring employee names make the office feel specific to this place and this team.

A CEILING THAT DOES MORE THAN IMPRESS

Sculptural Wood-and-Light Installation

The front-of-house transformation called for something that could unify reception and lounge without overpowering either. The result is a custom wood-and-light ceiling installation that brings warmth and a strong sense of arrival while quietly handling acoustics and building systems behind the scenes.

LOCAL ROOTS, GLOBAL PRESENCE

Brand Experience Grounded in Durham

BCG’s global identity shows up throughout the office, but so does Durham. Local photography, regionally inspired imagery, and a custom art installation featuring employee names make the space feel earned and specific to this community.

FLEXIBILITY BY DESIGN

A Workplace Built to Adapt

At 13,500 square feet, this office has to work hard. Varied work settings, from open lounges to focused areas and hospitality-forward amenities, give employees real options throughout the day while keeping movement and informal connection at the center of the plan.

RESULTS

Boston Consulting Group’s completed workplace provides a flexible, high-performing environment designed to grow with the firm.

The expanded and activated front-of-house, hospitality-inspired shared spaces, and locally rooted design elements have strengthened BCG’s ability to attract talent, engage clients, and reinforce its long-term commitment to the Triangle’s innovation ecosystem.
